Damariscotta is a small town in Maine famous for its architecture, its alewives, its pirate and pumpkin festival, and its fierce support of small local businesses.

Peter and Rachael plan to marry at the Historic Darrows Barn near the banks of the Damariscotta River, near a 2,500 year old shell midden, just minutes from downtown Damariscotta, Maine.

Damariscotta is three hours north of Boston, Massachusetts, one hour north of Portland, Maine, and two hours south of Bangor, Maine.  It can be reached by plane, train, or bus.

Ride sharing:

We created a forum to help our friends and family who may have questions about sharing transportation or rides to and from the airport or bus station: Muffinsandpoemsforum

Reaching Damariscotta by plane:

The largest local airport is in Portland, Maine but it’s also possible to fly into Augusta,  Bangor, Manchester (in New Hampshire–where we’ve heard from friends that car rentals are less expensive), or Boston (Boston typically has the least expensive rates.)

Reaching Damariscotta by Bus:

Concord Coach Lines is one of the least expensive ways to travel between Mid-Coast Maine and major transportation hubs like Portland and Boston. (Free wi-fi, plenty of space, and movies on board.)

Megabus also travels between Portland and Boston (and between Boston and Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York, and Washington D.C.)

Greyhound has stops in Portland, Lewiston, and Bangor, ME.

Reaching Damariscotta by Rail:

The Amtrak Downeaster connects Boston, Massachusetts to Brunswick, Maine (which is just over a half an hour from Damariscotta.)  It runs daily and tends to be reasonably priced.

Amtrak runs between Boston and most places and is usually quite comfortable and less expensive then flying.

Reaching Damariscotta by Car:

From the Midwest–

Damariscotta is 13 hours from Detroit (via Canada or 14.5 hours if you stay stateside), 17 hours from Chicago, 22 hours from Decorah, 20 hours from Madison, and 24 hours from Minneapolis.  If you would like to drive and need carpool suggestions from your region feel free to comment below or to contact Peter or Rachael.

From Maine:

Summer traffic can make Route 1 congested but on a good day Damariscotta is:

2 hours and 15 minutes from Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, 1 hour from Belfast, 45 minutes from Augusta, 45 minutes from Hallowell, 40 minutes from Brunswick, 40 minutes from Camden, 40 minutes from Rockland, 35 minutes from Rockport, 30 minutes from Bath, 25 minutes from Boothbay, 25 minutes from Whitefield, 20 minutest from Jefferson, 15 minutes from Alna, 15 minutes from Waldoboro, and 10 minutes from Bristol
